Statement of the Job :
The primary purpose of the Graphic Designer is to serve as a designer for the University of Maine as a member of the Creative Services Unit within the Division of Marketing and Communications. The Creative Services Unit provides the official graphic design and branding expertise and authority to the University of Maine. Under the direction and management of the Manager of Creative Services, this position creates graphic communication and marketing materials reflecting UMaine?s brand standards within the administration?s strategic messaging, Marketing and Communications Strategic Plan, UMaine Web Standards, and the day-to-day institutional marketing and visual identity. Typical hiring range for this position is $31,000-$35,000, commensurate with experience and qualifications.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Under the direction and management of the Manager of Creative Services, creates and coordinates graphic communication and marketing materials that implement and promote UMaine?s strategic plan, Marketing and Communications Strategic Plan, UMaine Web Standards, UMaine brand standards initiative and day-to-day institutional marketing and visual identity (including colleges/departments).
Collaborates with Creative Service Unit to facilitate design development (interviewing clients, translating creative vision into proofs, receiving feedback from clients, providing a finished product) of official visual communication projects for UMaine faculty, administrators and staff consistent with Marketing and Communications policy and procedure, UMaine brand standards, and official institutional marketing objectives.
Communicates both verbally and visually with clients to develop content structure, explain design concepts and rationale for incorporating various elements of style, color, format and consistency, with special attention to Marketing and Communications policy and procedure, UMaine brand standards and official institutional marketing objectives.
Provides expert and superior quality designs and illustrations for UMaine Today magazine.
As a Division of Marketing and Communication team member, collaborates to develop and present design concepts and projects on an institutional level. Emphasis is given to student recruitment publications and UMaine Today magazine under the Marketing and Communication Strategic Plan.
Chooses methods and materials to match the needs of the client both visually and economically. Meets deadlines.
Prepares digital files for a wide variety of formats.
Maintains detailed knowledge of, and experience with, software applications used in graphic design for printing and web design, including InDesign, Photoshop, Quark, Illustrator and WordPress.
Works effectively and cooperatively with members of the Marketing and Communications team, UMaine administration, the campus community, and other external clients and customers. Develops and maintains professional relationships that reflect courtesy, civility and mutual respect.

Qualifications :
Typically has the education associated with a bachelor?s degree and minimum of 3 years of professional experience or an equivalent combination of academic and directly related professional work experience.
Demonstrated excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Demonstrated ability to plan and perform involved or technical work presenting new or regularly changing design challenges, work from broad instruction and deal with complex factors.
Strong attention to detail and ability to handle multiple tasks.
Ability to work independently and as a member of a team.
Other Information :
Work Schedule: Normal University of Maine business hours are Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Work outside regular hours (to include evenings and weekends) may be necessary in order to meet the requirements of the position. The employee shall establish regular office hours and in consultation with the Manager of Creative Services adjust the work schedule as appropriate.

Don't Be Fooled

The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
