Assistant Professor of Nursing

The School of Nursing at the University of Maine seeks a collaborative colleague to join our faculty as an Assistant Professor of Nursing. The successful applicant is expected to fully participate in undergraduate and graduate education and build a strong research program. The State of Maine is expected to experience a shortfall of 3200 registered professional nurses by 2022. In rural areas of the state, notably Hancock and Washington counties, approximately 48% of registered professional nurses are expected to retire in the next five years. Because of the rural nature of the state, much of the research produced by the faculty of the School of Nursing relates to rural health issues. As a state in which aging of the population is a dominant concern, faculty members are engaged in ongoing deliberative work regarding aging and health. Cross-cutting linkages includes substance use and abuse, child health and protection, chronicity (AIDS, e.g.) and health care systems. This position would apply various fundamental translational principles, research methods (e.g., quantitative and qualitative work, psychometrics, and systems applications), and application of extant knowledge to resolution of pressing health care problems for both consumers and organizations. This work should also support state-of-the-art translation to clinical practice including development of modeling frameworks to better provide scientific information for addressing these challenges, making reliable predictions of future conditions, and guiding populations and organizations within the current realities of health care. Together with recent university hires, the advertised position will deepen our expertise in nursing and health sciences across academic units and centers in fulfillment of our Land-Grant University's mission.
The University of Maine is a Land Grant and Sea Grant university. The School of Nursing, established in 1939, awards traditional Bachelor of Science degrees in Nursing, as well as Master of Science in Nursing degrees in concentrations such as Family Nurse Practitioner, Nurse Educator, and individualized areas of concentration (Nursing Service Administration, e.g.) The School of Nursing is currently supported by a planning grant to implement an accelerated BSN program for those who already hold at least a Bachelor's degree. The School of Nursing participates in both the Honors Programs of the University as well as the individualized-PhD program. Many of our faculty also continue clinical practice as one method of identifying researchable areas amenable to intervention. We are a vibrant School that has experienced a 35% increase in enrollment in the last two years. Detailed information about the programs and faculty is available at www.nursing.umaine.edu. The University of Maine is located in Orono, a small college town bounded by the Stillwater and Penobscot Rivers. The campus is just eight miles north of Bangor, one of the largest cities in Maine. Bangor serves as the commercial and medical hub for northern, central and eastern Maine. The Bangor Region is centrally located in the state, providing nearby access to mountains, forests, rivers, lakes, and the ocean. Orono is a 4-hour drive from Boston, 5 hours from Quebec City, 90 minutes from Baxter State Park and the Appalachian Trail, and 90 minutes from Bar Harbor, the home of Acadia National Park.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
Research interests centered on compatible efforts supported by our land grant, sea grant and rural areas of emphasis and excellence.
A Ph.D. in nursing or closely related field at the time of appointment.
A record or ability to publish outcomes of nursing research in peer reviewed journals.
A record or ability to secure funding for nursing and health related research compatible with our areas of emphasis and engagement.
The ability to teach effectively at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, as needed.
Experience with areas of rural health emphasis.
Experience with particular populations of special interest to the state, including but not limited to population health, substance abuse, and aging.
Advanced practice preparation in nursing.
Preference will be given to candidates prepared to teach or contribute to the following courses in a specified area of clinical expertise:
NUR 447 (Undergraduate Seminar);
NUR 455, Clinical Partnership;
NUR 456 Senior Synthesis;
NUR 265 Human Genetics/Genomics for Nursing Practice.
Additionally, the preferred candidate will document experience in teaching in simulation and online environments.
Knowledge, Skills & Qualifications:
75% Teaching / 25% Research.
A 75% teaching appointment involves teaching 7.5 credits per semester.
Advising undergraduate and graduate students.
Research expectations include developing an extramurally funded, nationally recognized, program of research and collaborating with scientists and educators within and external to the School and College.
Engaging in service and leadership opportunities with clinical partners, professional societies, state agencies, and regional research groups.

Don't Be Fooled

The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
