Research Scientist

Purpose:
This position will fulfil project needs to design and fabricate thin films and surface acoustic wave devices and respective radio frequency (RF) electronic circuitry for SAW wireless sensors to be installed in power plants. The staff is required to perform research and development tasks and oversee project progress. The person will interact closely with the PIs, graduate and undergraduate students from Physics and Engineering, coordinate laboratory activities and wafer fabrication and associate processes, components, and systems, and interact with Environetix Technologies Corp. in transitioning the technology to power plants. The anticipated hiring range for this position is $64,000 to $68,000, commensurate with qualifications and experience.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
Participates in funded projects related to wireless sensor technology for harsh environments.
Manages and carries out research/development activities and interacts with collaborative partners.
Fabricate wireless microwave acoustic sensor systems including sensor chips, antennas, and appropriate packaging for attachment at harsh environment locations in relevant test beds.
Evaluate sensor performance by developing wireless sensor technology, measuring properties of RF devices and systems, and writing LabView/MATLAB code.
Work with faculty, staff, and students in planning, management, and carrying out the installation and testing of wireless sensor systems in collaboration with industry partners and external collaborators.
Document and archive experimental project data. Oversee day-to-day data aspects of the project and ensure that the data is collected, processed, and analyzed according to funding agency guidelines.
Prepare and disseminate project results in the form of written reports and presentations; effectively communicate ideas and information to funding agencies and other team partners.
Perform maintenance of equipment related to fabrication, design, and testing of sensor devices and materials.
Monitor laboratory materials inventory and prepare/track purchase order specifications as assigned by supervisor.
Knowledge, Skills & Qualifications:
Required:
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Applied Physics, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Engineering/Science, or a related field.
Understanding of radio frequency technology.
Preferred:
MSc or PhD degree.
Experience with radio frequency circuit design and implementation.
Experience with antennas and wireless communications.
Familiarity with semiconductor fabrication techniques, including photolithography, thin film deposition, and etching.
Experience and hands-on knowledge of most of the following hardware technology, respective software, and concepts:
Network analyzers
Spectrum analyzers
Wireless communication and electronic design
Circuit and device design
Signal processing
Microwave acoustic sensors
Antennas
Measurement techniques
USRP (Universal Software Radio Peripheral)
LabVIEW System Design Software
MATLAB
Clean Room techniques, including mask design and generation, photolithography, and etching
Thin film deposition techniques
Willingness to complement the knowledge and experience by learning how to operate and manage new tools.
Willingness to travel occasionally to customer sites to perform tests and installations.
Demonstrated success in report writing, preparing presentations, and communicating ideas and information to funding agencies and other team partners.
Ability to work and thrive independently and as a member of a diverse, collaborative team.
Work Schedule: Normal University of Maine business hours are Monday through Friday 8:00am to 4:30pm. Work beyond regular hours (to include nights and weekends) may be necessary in order to complete the requirements of the position. The employee shall establish regular office hours and, in consultation with the supervisor, adjust the work schedule as appropriate.
Work Environment: Laboratory setting involving high voltage, chemicals and gases, vacuum pumps, computer controlled instrumentation.
Position Type: Soft-money grant funded, contingent on external funding and successful performance.
Schedule for Evaluation: In the initial six months of employment and annually thereafter in accordance with the UMPSA agreement.
The successful applicant is subject to appropriate background screening and a post offer physical.

Don't Be Fooled

The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
