Communications Manager

Purpose:
The purpose of this position is to help update, implement and evaluate a strategic plan for Advanced Structures and Composites Center (ASCC) communications; to identify, educate, and cultivate a broad range of constituencies and stakeholders; and to develop external and internal resources to support communications activities. This position will assist the Director in developing and implementing improved communications processes internally and externally, and maximizing earned media exposure in top national and international media outlets. This position will work to cultivate, steward, and expand relationships between the organization and prospective donors, foundations, and Alumni, leading to sustained multi-million-dollar grants or donations. This position reports to the Center Director and works with Management and Staff. The anticipated hiring range for this position is $55,000 to $80,000, commensurate with qualifications and experience.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
Scope
Reviews, updates and implements Center communication plan.
Develops the communication plans for projects and oversees the development of content, designs, and production of communication materials that support these plans; these include, but are not limited to social media, posters, presentations, written briefs, website, videos, signage, reports, brochures, newsletters, flyers, press releases, exhibits, technology summaries for investors and public outreach materials.
Determines and monitors Center data collection requirements; reviews the appropriate systems for the collection and analysis of data; monitors, evaluates and periodically reports on trends and metrics.
Plans Center sponsored conferences, exhibitions and other events as assigned by Director.
Provides the final review for various documents and publications for composition, content, accuracy, and consistency such as grant proposals and outreach materials.
Conducts managerial duties to ensure the efficient and effective production of external and internal communications materials Cultivates, stewards, and expands relationships with prospective donors and alumni to support growth of Center outreach, operations, and other funds, with a goal of helping attract millions of dollars of sustained private and foundation giving.
Support ISO 17025 Quality Management System by monitoring customer (e.g. industrial clients, university community, general public, students and staff) service and by incorporating customer service goals into the communications strategic plan.
Collaborates with university departments to provide a better understanding of Center operations, student opportunities, and potential for collaboration.
Monitors strategic planning efforts.
Coordinate development of annual reports.
Budget
Develops and analyzes annual communications budget, makes recommendations to Director.
Develops externally funded programs (such as sponsorships, grants, and other auxiliary enterprises) to support annual communications budget and other Center activities.
Identify externally funding opportunities (foundations, individuals, corporations) and support relevant program managers in pursuing and acquiring resources through these opportunities.
Supervision
Directly supervises other Communications staff, graduate, and undergraduate student(s).
Identifies, recruits and supervises graduate research assistants and/or interns from relevant academic departments including communications and journalism, new media, English, business administration/marketing.
Coordinates and supervises a variety of subcontractors or personnel performing specialized communications functions (graphic design, website development, video production, etc.).
Contacts
At the direction of the Director, educates and cultivates Advanced Structures and Composites Center constituencies and stakeholders through targeted mailings and/or electronic communications, social media, press releases, feature stories, media coverage, exhibits, speaking engagements, networking opportunities, and individual communications such as phone calls, meetings, or tours.
Maintains and develops a communications network including UMaine university relations personnel, local media, trade journal editors and writers, communications peers with state and federal agencies.
Actively contacts prospective donors or sponsors including individual donors, companies, or foundations.
Maintains collaborative relationship with Colleges, UMaine Foundation, and ORA.
Develops and maintains relationship with Division of Marketing and Communications, UMS General Counsel and UMS Risk Assessment for media-related events.
Temporary assignments to working groups or committees, representing the Advanced Structures and Composites Center, at the request of the Director.
Performs other reasonably related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills & Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree required. Communications, sciences, or MBA degrees preferred.
Experience in public relations, media, social media, and communication, at least five years desired.
Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office, MS Project, Adobe Creative Suite, social media, and web.
Excellent written and oral communication skills essential.
Developed knowledge of emerging communications technologies, social media, graphic design, photography, and video.
Demonstrated proficiency in technical writing required.
Demonstrated ability to handle multiple projects, short deadlines and changing priorities.
Experience in proposal preparation required.
Leadership Maine Alumni a plus.
Position Type: Ongoing, base budgeted.
Work Schedule: Normal University of Maine business hours are Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Work outside of regular business hours (to include nights and weekends) will be necessary at times in order to meet the requirements of the position. In consultation with the supervisor the employee will establish regular office hours and adjust work schedule as necessary. This position is considered Essential Personnel for the ASCC Storm Day Policy.
Appropriate background checks are required.

Don't Be Fooled

The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
