Community Education Assistant CL2 (Lewiston)

Purpose:
Position is available to employees of the Associated C.O.L.T. Staff of the University of Maine from September 21, 2017 to September 27, 2017 and open to external applicants thereafter.
Part-time, regular soft-money grant funded position. 12-15 hours per week starting January 1, 2018. Work schedule to be determined in consultation with supervisor, with daily work hours flexible within Monday - Friday, 2:00 p.m.- 6:30 p.m. Occasional weekend work required. This position supports in school and out of school 4-H Youth Development programs through the Maine 4-H Community Central Program. This position is based in Lewiston, Maine. This position pays $13.95/hour.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
Plans and implements educational programs and activities for youth in grades 3-6 with a focus on science, engineering, technology, math and leadership.
Offers research-based youth development information to parents, community and school partners.
Collaborates with Lewiston Housing, local schools, community organizations, parents and volunteers to successfully implement educational activities.
Adheres to civil rights requirements.
Promotes other Extension programming when appropriate.
Develops and maintains professional relationships that reflect courtesy, civility, and mutual respect.
Builds productive relationships with internal and external constituencies.
Utilizes coaching and mentoring methods which provide an environment that is anticipatory, supportive, and encourages constructive feedback on performance.
Commits to organizational improvement by identifying opportunities to improve and recommending possible alternatives for a situation.
Performs other reasonably related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills & Qualifications:
Required:
High school diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.) and two or more years of experience in youth development or related field.
Experience working with youth.
Experience working with public housing.
Formal or informal teaching experience.
Classroom or Group management skills.
Demonstrated knowledge of and proficiency in Microsoft Office applications including Word, PowerPoint & Excel.
Strong organizational and customer service skills.
Skills in working well and effectively with a diverse population in a variety of settings.
Independent work skills.
Previous experience working in a team-oriented environment.
Demonstrated sound judgment, strict attention to detail, initiative and commitment to confidentiality.
Ability to occasionally lift 30 to 50 pounds.
Ability to travel normally requiring a valid driver's license. Mileage is reimbursed at current University rate.
Preferred:
Associates Degree or relevant coursework in education, youth development, social work or related fields.
Prior experience working with underserved or at-risk populations.
Training as a 4-H Volunteer.
Appropriate background checks are required.

Don't Be Fooled

The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
