Communications Specialist I

Purpose:
The purpose of this position is to produce provide communications support consistent with goals and objectives of Advanced Structures and Composites Center. This position reports to the Communications Manager and may work directly with a variety of internal stakeholders including undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, and staff to provide a variety of communications products. Typical hiring range for this position is $31,000 to $41,000, commensurate with experience and qualifications.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
Scope
Produces and maintains, for internal and external communication distribution, materials including, but not limited to, posters, presentations, website, videos, signage, brochures, newsletters, flyers, and exhibits
Maintains Advanced Structures and Composites Center communications system, including but not limited to, tracking media coverage, publications, presentations, photo archive, media files, website optimization, community outreach and education activities
Writing and editing of marketing materials, reports, proposals and press releases
Maintains promotional signage, posters, screens in the Advanced Structures and Composites Center lobby and laboratory
Coordinates preparations for trade shows, exhibitions and other events
Assures that all activities and communications comply with and support Advanced Structures and Composites Center strategic plan, style guide, safety plan, management initiatives, and ISO 17025 Quality Management System

Orders and purchases communications supplies
Supervision
Supervises and manages undergraduate student(s) in the production of communications materials and the collection of communications data
Contacts
Communicates with University Relations staff, Printing and Mailing Services, other UMaine communications specialists to maintain efficient and coordinated Advanced Structures and Composites Center communications
Works with Advanced Structures and Composites Center students, faculty and staff to support their communications needs
Performs other reasonably related duties as assigned
Knowledge, Skills & Qualifications:
Bachelor's in communications, business or related field required or substantial experience in field.
Demonstrated proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (specifically InDesign, Illustrator, and Premiere), Microsoft Office Suite, Mailchimp, and Wordpress.
Excellent written and oral communication skills essential.
Demonstrated writing proficiency required.
Knowledge of emerging communications technologies, graphic design, photography, video, and social media.
Ability to handle multiple projects, short deadlines and changing priorities.
Position Type: Soft-funded position, contingent on funding and successful performance.
Work Schedule: Normal University of Maine business hours are Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Work outside of regular business hours (to include nights and weekends) will be necessary at times in order to meet the requirements of the position. In consultation with the supervisor the employee will establish regular office hours and adjust work schedule as necessary.
Work Environment: Work will be performed at the Advanced Structures and Composites Center 100,000 ft2 laboratory with a world-leading team of over 150 faculty, staff and students who conduct contract research with a variety of public and private entities developing the next generation of low-cost, high performance composite materials.
Schedule for Evaluation: In the initial six months of employment and annually thereafter in accordance with the UMPSA agreement.
Appropriate background checks are required.

Don't Be Fooled

The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
