Advisor I-II Oxford Hills

This position is part of the Maine Educational Talent Search (METS) program. The Advisor executes targeted recruitment workshops to fully enroll assigned number of eligible middle and high school participants in the METS program. Provide academic, career, and educational advising, academic support, and cultural and collegiate experiences to prepare them for a successful transition into a college degree program. Assist a minimum of 80% of the 12th grade participants in accessing college each year. This position primarily serves the Oxford Hills, Maine region. The salary range for this position is $22,987 to $35,000 commensurate with experience.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
Recruit, select and enroll Talent Search students as defined by federal regulations and program policy.
Provide academic, career, college admission and financial aid counseling to students or program participants through individual and/or group counseling sessions.
Engage in collaborative efforts to ensure comprehensive support and education opportunities for students. Seek internal and external resources to augment program services to students.
Develop and conduct in-service seminars, presentations, and workshops for ongoing service curriculum.
Advocate for and refer participants to other institutions and appropriate educational and social agencies as indicated.
Monitor and analyze trends and developments relevant to problems and needs of students and program participants.
Document staff and participant activities and comply with all rules and regulations as outlined and described in the Current METS Advisor Handbook and the University of Maine's policy and procedures manual.
Work effectively and cooperatively with other members of the METS team, University of Maine administration, the campus community, and other external clients and customers. Develop and maintain professional relationships that reflect courtesy, civility, and mutual respect.
Perform other reasonably related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills & Qualifications:
Baccalaureate required, master degree preferred, in educational counseling, education, or other appropriate and related field.
A successful candidate for this position should have at least 1-3 years' experience working with low-income and educationally disadvantaged youth in an educational environment.

Experience with recruiting persons from diverse and multicultural populations
Knowledge of aptitude/vocational testing tools; previous experience working independently of direct supervision.
Preference given to individuals who have succeeded in overcoming the disadvantages of circumstance like those of the population the project serves.
Ability to travel, typically requiring a valid Maine driver's license.
Supervisory Responsibility: None.
Work Environment/Dynamics: Advisors are not required to be on call, but some evening and/or weekend work is required. METS Advisors share office space and equipment with other MEOC/METS Advisors. Frequent travel to agencies, colleges, Orono Headquarters, and professional conferences is necessary. The METS Advisor position is fast paced. Job duties are diverse in nature and vary from day to day. The workload of Advisors requires individual initiative, good judgment, and requires frequent multi-tasking.
Work Year: Full-time -Ten (10) months, September 1 to June 30.
Work Schedule: Regular University of Maine business hours are Monday through Friday 8:00 am-4:30 pm. It is expected that a time commitment of at least 40 hours per week (to include nights and weekends) will be necessary in order to meet the needs of the program and the participants served. The employee will establish regular office hours in consultation with and approval of the Project Director, and adjust the work schedule as necessary.
Position Type: Funding for this full time, Regular University position is secure through August 31, 2021. Re-appointment is contingent on funding from outside the University and successful job performance.
Promotion: After successfully completing 18 months of employment in this position, the Advisor I will be eligible for promotion to the Advisor II level at the time of the next re-appointment (September 1).
Schedule for Evaluation: The advisor will report to the Project Director who will perform the annual evaluation in accordance with the UMPSA Agreement.

Don't Be Fooled

The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
